Divide and Conquer: Making a Large Meditation Room Intimate

Sounds like a designer’s dream…to have a cavernous space within which to create. Although, if the goal is to fashion an intimate and relaxing ambience, the task could prove daunting. Here’s an option…

Break the room up into quadrants. Create four distinct “spaces” within the larger space. The first will have a grouping of plush chairs for meditators to sink into. Adjacent to that can be firmer, more upright seating for those who prefer that. Add a set of large floor pillows in a corner toward the front of the room. Beside that arrangement, also at the front, cluster cushy ottomans…some want an experience close to the floor but need more support. Colors can break up the spaces or bring them together. Choosing one hue for each seating ensemble connects the spaces, while individual rugs add to the coziness of each area. However, overall décor should blur the lines of the quadrants as the room should have a unified feel. A large plant in the middle of the room with rocks surrounding brings the room together. Symmetrical lighting on the walls does the same.

If the room is large but not vast, break it up into three areas…soft chairs, firm chairs and cushions.

As with any design process, the choices are limitless. Have at it!
